Which BMW key system do I have?

The model code on your registration or in the door jamb decides it faster than the year.

Short answer
  • E-codes (E46, E39, E53): EWS.
  • E-codes from about 2004 (E60, E90, E70): CAS.
  • F-codes: CAS4 on early cars, FEM or BDC on later ones.
  • G-codes: BDC.

Why it matters

EWS and CAS cars are usually the quickest. FEM and BDC cars often need the module read before an all keys lost key can be made.
